At United Farmers of Alberta Co-operative (UFA), we believe that federal and provincial governments must work together to improve trade and to ensure a level international playing field for all agriculture commodities. As such, we are committed to raising the profile of the agriculture industry on a national level.
We are pleased to announce that UFA, together with the Board of Directors of Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada (CMC) and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA), recently passed a significant resolution that ensures the agriculture industry is present at all levels, including at the national level.
Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada (CMC) is a member-driven association that supports, promotes and unites co-operative and mutual organizations. CMC strives to advance the co-operative economy by organizing co-op development, advocating with government and conducting research to improve public policy.
Jim Bettcher, UFA and CMC Director, led the charge that brought forward the resolution to the CMC advocating on behalf of all of our industries.
The resolution ensures CMC’s commitment to recognize Agriculture as a leading economic driver and to be an advocacy channel for its agricultural members. The resolution reads as follows:
BE IT RESOLVED THAT:
- The Board of Directors of Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada (CMC) recommend, in concert with UFA and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture:
Promote the national contributions of the agricultural sector in the Canadian economy and increase its efforts to enhance and promote the economic well-being of agricultural producers and the agriculture industry in Canada through education, awareness, advocacy and strategic partnerships with the federal and provincial governments and other key stakeholders.
Together, we recognize that the Canadian Agricultural Partnership is a pivotal component to the long-term success of the agricultural industry. We would like to take the opportunity to formally thank the CMC and CFA for their continued efforts in working together with UFA to ensure that agriculture is represented at the national level. We would also like to acknowledge the efforts of UFA and CMC Board Member, Jim Bettcher, who has championed this resolution and who has helped to effect positive change for our industry.
