Congratulations to UFA’s Summer Synergy scholarship winners
Olds, AB – UFA proudly supports Summer Synergy, one of the marquee youth livestock events in the province. Summer Synergy showcases youth in Agriculture and enhances the profile of rural lifestyle and primary production in Alberta. The program is a great development opportunity for youth ages 9-20 who have a passion for agriculture.
Over the course of the event, which ran from July 11 – 17, 2016, youth competed to win varying awards and scholarships contributed by UFA, Olds College, Ag For Life and other organizations who share a passion for youth development. Contestants were judged on grooming, showmanship and marketing of various livestock breeds, and in the fall of 2016, UFA gave away two $1,000 RESP scholarships to two well-deserving senior level winners.
Cole McMahon, a 19-year-old who grew up on his family’s grain farm in Galahad, AB, is a second-year Agribusiness student at the University of Saskatchewan. As a 5th generation farmer he hopes to return to the family farm upon graduation. “I have known for a long time now that I wanted to be a farmer. I want to be the one on the ground growing the crops to feed the world just like my dad and grandpa did before me. I have lived my entire life on a grain farm, and am the 5th generation in my family to do so; so you could say that my passion for agriculture was bred into me,” Cole stated in his application letter. Cole understands the importance of strong community leaders and hopes to help lead the agriculture industry into the future. “I’d like to thank UFA for sponsoring this scholarship,” stated Cole upon receiving the good news. “The sponsorship is so greatly appreciated, and will help me to continue working towards my degree.”
The second recipient, Megan McLeod, a 20-year-old pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce at the University of Saskatchewan, hopes to work in Agriculture Marketing. “When I envision my future, agriculture remains a focal point,” stated Megan after she found out she would be receiving the scholarship. “It is my goal to find a career in agriculture, which will help me to give back to the industry that has supported me, and has helped me become the person that I am.” Megan feels that opportunities such as these help grow our youth of today into leaders for tomorrow. She understands community is a tight-knit group of people who come together in times of celebration, crisis, tragedy, or in any situation where support is needed. The agriculture industry is a community and UFA is a part of that community.
UFA believes a true co-operative gives back to our community, investing in our youth, and supporting our agriculture industry. Investing in youth leadership development and programs like Summer Synergy, helps us prepare our next generation to lead the way.
